Paul Allonby had started his commercial photographic business,
Lakeland Photographic in Ambleside, and to supplement his
income, he was on a retainer (paid to be available) to the
Lancashire Evening Post, a local evening paper. He attended
at Coniston when able, which usually meant each morning, early
before he started his regular work. Paul recalls, "I
seemed to spend a lot of time there during the 9 weeks. On
the morning of the crash however I phoned at 6am and spoke
to Clive Glynn (the young apprentice) who told me that the
weather was bad and Donald was not going out that morning,
so I did not go immediately, but arrived there at about 9am
to find that Donald had crashed and everyone was shell-shocked."
Following the tragedy, Paul's images were used in the book
"With Campbell at Coniston" written by Arthur Knowles,
which has been published on several occasions since 1967.
Paul has received many awards for his still photography &
camera work and is currently a freelance television cameraman.
